**CA students demand postponement of exams amd clash with Lok Sabha elections**
A recent development in the field of Chartered Accountancy (CA) education has brought to the fore concerns regarding the timing of examinations for CA students amid the Lok Sabha elections in India. A group of CA students has moved their petition to the Supreme Court seeking postponement of the exams, highlighting the conflict between the impending ICAI exams and the democratic process of general elections.
The plea, filed as a public interest litigation (PIL) on April 16, 2024, outlines the challenge posed by the scheduling clash between the CA exams and the Lok Sabha elections. The move comes after an earlier petition in the Delhi High Court was rejected, confirming that the CA exams will not be postponed.
Despite this setback, the students are seeking relief from the Supreme Court through legal representation as well as legal channels. Pending announcement of the date of hearing of the PIL, advocate Nirnimesh Dubey is set to present the case on behalf of the concerned students.
The students’ petition revolves around the clash between the exam dates and the crucial period of democratic participation during the elections to be held from May 19 to June 4, 2024. They argue that this overlap not only presents logistical challenges but also violates their fundamental rights. To participate in the democratic process.
Efforts to resolve the issue have included correspondence with the Election Commission of India and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI), as well as writing an open letter to Prime Minister Modi urging his intervention to reschedule the exams. However, ICAI has maintained its stand on not postponing the exams citing the need to maintain academic integrity and adhere to the exam timetable.

The CA exam timetable remains unchanged, with CA Inter and CA Final exams scheduled from May 2 to May 17, 2024. The International Taxation – Valuation exam is also scheduled for May 14 and 16, 2024, while the CA Foundation course exam will remain unaffected. Scheduled for June.
